The Ibaraki Prefectural Library, completed in 2000, is a significant architectural adaptation that transforms the former Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly Hall into a modern cultural facility. Located in Mito's historic Sannomaru district, this project represents thoughtful heritage preservation combined with contemporary library design. Designed by Nikken Sekkei in collaboration with Ibaraki Prefecture's Civil Engineering and Architecture Division, the building successfully honors its legislative past while serving new educational purposes. The transformation demonstrates how historic structures can be reimagined for public benefit, creating a bridge between architectural tradition and modern community needs.
