Kouenji Geshuku Saisei is a contemporary residential project completed in 2015 in Suginami Ward, Tokyo. Designed by architect Masataka Baba and Yuuki Hiraiwa of OPEN A, this innovative structure reimagines the traditional Japanese lodging house typology for modern living. The building combines elements of traditional nagaya row houses and contemporary terrace housing, functioning as both shared accommodation and individual residential units. The project thoughtfully revitalizes the historic Kouenji neighborhood while responding to contemporary urban housing needs, making it an exemplary case of adaptive design that honors architectural heritage while embracing contemporary community living.
