Miyakawa-suji no Machiya/2254 is a contemporary accommodation facility located in Kyoto, completed in 2019 and designed by Atelier Wan. This project thoughtfully integrates modern hospitality functions within a traditional machiya framework, respecting Kyoto's architectural heritage while meeting contemporary guest needs. The design exemplifies sensitive adaptive reuse, preserving the authentic character of the historic streetscape along Miyakawa-suji while introducing subtle interventions that enhance functionality. The building demonstrates how traditional wooden townhouse typology can be respectfully reimagined for modern tourism and cultural exchange, making it a compelling example of heritage-conscious design in Japan's ancient capital.
