This abandoned schoolhouse in Tokamachi, Niigata was transformed into an art installation for the 2006 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial. Designed by renowned French artist Christian Boltanski in collaboration with Jean Kalman and local architect Imamura Sohei, the former Higashikawa Elementary School became "The Last Classroom." The conversion preserves the building's original character while integrating contemporary artistic interventions, creating a poignant dialogue between educational heritage and modern artistic expression. This temporary museum exemplifies how historic structures can be reimagined as meaningful cultural venues within large-scale community art projects.
