This temporary school building in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, represents an innovative response to the 2008 earthquake disaster. Designed by Keio University's Shigeru Ban and Hironori Matsubara laboratories, the structure employs paper tubes as its primary structural material, demonstrating sustainable and cost-effective disaster recovery architecture. Completed in 2008, this facility served as an educational space for elementary through high school students while permanent structures were being rebuilt. The project exemplifies how creative design and unconventional materials can provide dignified, functional solutions during humanitarian crises while advancing architectural sustainability principles.
