Naoshima Nagaya, designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi Architects and completed in 2023, represents a contemporary approach to traditional Japanese row housing. Located in Miyaura, Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, this residential project thoughtfully reinterprets the classic nagaya typology for modern living. The architecture balances respect for the island's cultural heritage with sustainable design principles characteristic of Sambuichi's practice. By adapting the long-house format to contemporary needs, this project demonstrates how vernacular housing traditions can evolve while maintaining their essential character and community-oriented spatial qualities.
