Completed in 2022, the 52 Engawa is a distinctive elderly welfare facility located in Yachimata, Chiba Prefecture. Designed by Kensataro Yamazaki Design Workshop, this innovative structure takes its name from the traditional Japanese engawa, or veranda, featuring fifty-two such elements throughout its design. The building masterfully blends contemporary architecture with traditional Japanese spatial concepts, creating a human-scaled environment that promotes community interaction and well-being among residents. The extensive use of engawa spaces serves both functional and therapeutic purposes, offering sheltered outdoor areas that encourage social engagement while maintaining connection to nature.
